The Campaign

Commerce & Industry Council

Working together to support the new face of healthcare for women

In 1990, a group of dedicated business professionals and community leaders came together with a common purpose: to support the state-of-the-art healthcare programs and services provided by North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), including the hospital's Emergency Department. Now, the Commerce & Industry Council has united to support a $10 million capital campaign for the new Katz Institute for Women's Health and Katz Women's Hospital.

"3rd Annual Commerice & Industry Corporate Breakfast"
Obesity becoming more common in the workplace

Over 140 professionals gathered at the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset on October 25, 2011 to hear our own, Dr. Jacqueline Moline, VP of Population Health of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, present her work on mitigating healthcare costs for employees.

Dr. Moline asked, "Are your employees tending toward fat? Or are they even obese?" There's a good chance they are, according to Dr. Moline.

What's this got to do with the cost of doing business? Plenty, said Moline, before North Shore-LIJ's Commerce and Industry Council, a volunteer business group that raises funds for health causes.

"We are seeing more chronic disease increase in the workplace," Moline said at the breakfast sponsored by TD Bank. "We always think of the medical costs," she added. "But we're not thinking of poor health and how it affects business."

Two basic ways, she said: absenteeism and "presenteeism." Presenteeism, Moline said, is when you're there, but not there, because you're sick and trying to work anyway.

Companies, Moline said, need to start exercise and weight-control programs, place healthier foods in cafeterias and vending machines and encourage stress reduction.

Not enough companies are doing these things, said Jeanine L. Bondi, chairwoman of the council and a Melville-based technology executive. She attributed that to corporate cutbacks.

"There's not been enough attention to this," Bondi said.

2nd Annual Every Woman Matters Walk Brings Fundrasing Total to Nearly $1 Million

Neither cloudy skies nor a chill in the air could dampen the spirits of the thousands who came out to Jones Beach on May 22nd for the 2nd annualEvery Woman Matters Walk. This 5k walk brought together family, friends and the whole community for an inspirational walk along the boardwalk to celebrate women's health and wellness.

Since the inception of the Every Woman Matters Walk in 2010, nearly $1 million has been raised to support The Katz Institute for Women’s Healthand Katz Women’s Hospitals. While fundraising for the Walk continues through June 3rd, this year’s Walk looks to be another huge success.

A sea of green, pink and blue colored team shirts were intermingled amongst throngs of families and friends all walking along the boardwalk that morning. Our new title sponsor, Long Island Real Estate Group (LIREG) along with their president, David Einbinder, has already committed to being a title sponsor next year. And for a second year, Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate, along with CEO Dottie Herman, organized 30 teams in support of the Walk.

“It is always a magnificent feeling to partner with the North Shore-LIJ Health System,” said Jeanine L. Bondi, Associate Trustee & Chair of the Commerce & Industry Council, who co-hosted the Walk. “The Walk showcases proactive approaches to wellness, healthy living and medical advancements for women and girls across our region. The Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Katz Women’s Hospitals will be beacons of hope, education, research and outreach for countless generations to come and I am honored to be a part of it.”

“Excitement and friendly competition was in the air,” cited Dr. Neeta Shah, Vice President of Women's Health Services at the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Despite the cold weather, we had a great turnout and I would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, supporters and participants for making this event a huge success.”
Highlights of the day included working the da VinciTM robot, the state-of-the-art surgical instrument that allow surgeons to remotely perform minimally-invasive surgeries, an early-morning zumba class, a warm-up with wellness advocate Donna Martini, live music by Get Nervous, health education and information provided in The Katz Institute of Women’s Health showcase tent, lots of giveaways from our wonderful sponsors and so much more.

Committed to the advancement of women’s health, North Shore-LIJ Health System has plans to open theKatz Women’s Hospital at LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park and at the North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. 2nd Annual Corporate Breakfast Raises Awareness

On October 19, 2010, Commerce & Industry Council (CIC) along with North Shore-LIJ Health System Foundation hosted the second annual Corporate Breakfast at North Hills Country Club in Manhasset. More than 100 prominent business leaders from across Long Island gathered to celebrate the exciting progress that has been made on North Shore-LIJ Health System’s new two-campus Katz Women’s Hospital.

"CIC is delighted to see the Katz Women's Hospital construction progress and looks forward to witnessing their openings,” said Jeanine Bondi, co-chair of CIC and an associate trustee of the health system. “Events like the Corporate Breakfast enable CIC to familiarize professionals from across our region with North Shore-LIJ so that they will lend their support to the capital campaign. Such forums also foster the expansion of health services, outreach and advocacy to the Long Island business community.”

Sponsored for the second year in a row by TDBank, the Corporate Breakfast provided attendees with a valuable networking opportunity as well as a wealth of information about Katz Women’s Hospital and other health system initiatives. Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO of North Shore-LIJ, served as keynote speaker.

Construction is well underway on Katz Women’s Hospital at both North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and LIJ Medical Center in New Hyde Park. North Shore-LIJ hopes to unveil the completed Katz Women’s Hospital at North Shore in May 2011 and at LIJ in March 2012. At the same time, The Katz Institute for Women’s Health has been established to provide women with educational and outreach programs, lifestyle and wellness programs, and groundbreaking clinical trials devoted to discovering treatments and cures for a wide range of conditions.

Commerce & Industry Council (CIC) is a group of business leaders who came together years ago to raise significant funds in support of the Emergency Department at North Shore University Hospital. Following a successful campaign, CIC recently reunited with many new members and is now committed to raising $10 million for The Katz Institute for Women's Health and Katz Women's Hospital.

Every Woman Matters Walk Raises More Than $500K!

Wantagh, New York—On Sunday, May 16, 2010, crowds converged on Jones Beach State Park — but not for a leisurely day of sunbathing. Instead, these 4,000 women, men and children donned their sneakers and crossed the boardwalk as participants in Every Woman Matters: A Walk for Women and Their Families, which raised more than $500,000 for the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s new Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Katz Women’s Hospital.

The resounding success of the first Every Woman Matters Walk is thanks in part to the generosity of title sponsor Dottie Herman and Prudential Douglas Elliman, whose employees formed an impressive number of teams and raised significant funds. Also playing a major role in both fundraising and outreach was the Commerce & Industry Council, a group of business professionals and philanthropists who co-hosted the walk with North Shore-LIJ.

“The Every Woman Matters Walk was a truly inspirational day to celebrate women's health and wellness, and its success will have far-reaching effects on the community,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “The more than $500,000 raised through this walk will benefit the health system’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health — which brings together the many women’s services North Shore-LIJ currently offers — and the new Katz Women’s Hospital now under construction, where medical care will be delivered with service, comfort and elegance to women.”

Before setting off on their 3.1-mile journey, participants received educational materials and massages inside of the Healthy Living Exhibition and Showcase tent, enjoyed healthy refreshments courtesy of several sponsors, and were motivated by speeches from a number of prominent community members, including Every Woman Matters Walk Spokeswoman Lolita Lopez of WPIX News.

“It was incredibly gratifying to see this many people come together in support of a cause that is so important to the entire community,” said Saul B. Katz, chairman of North Shore-LIJ's Board of Trustees. “It is our goal to transform women’s health services in the New York metropolitan area, and the Every Woman Matters Walk has proven to be a terrific step in the right direction.”
